Well, that was a pretty interesting read. While I don't agree with all of it, there are some things that really stand out that I want to emphasize. While I understand the whole journey and adventure aspect, at some point Ash has got to grow up. Of course, having an older MC is not as appealing to kids, so there's the other option of changing MCs (and I think after Diamond and Pearl would have made the most sense). That said, the recent seasons all have big problems and do one thing in particular wrong.

So starting with Black and White, that season was just a mess but I do appreciate its attempt to change things up a bit. It's just that the execution could have been way better. What I praise this season for doing is giving Team Rocket a break as it feels like their appearance was forced more than anything and not forcing them in at times when it's all about Ash making serious steps in development is something I like. That said Ash's regression into a beginner was just totally uncalled for and seeing his Pikachu losing to a brand new Snivy was just bad writing (if so, at least Ash should have lost using an Oshawott or Tepig rather than his Pikachu), and not to mention making all those rookie mistakes. The part with Team Galactic was nicely done, but then the journey back through the Decalore islands was pretty terrible and totally unnecessary. At least this show changed things up and did a nice job with the more serious aspects that this season has, so it's not a complete loss.

As for XY, just about everything was great as I really like Serena and this season really built her character up. That said, the pacing was the one big flaw this season had as the story just dragged when Ash was getting his eight gym badges. But after that, the story was just rushed as the Kalos League begins almost immediately after he won his badges, all while the whole league and the Team Flare stuff afterwards went by way too quickly (yeah, I get that there's Alain's backstory in the specials, but at least there should have been much more about this in the main series). These guys were hellbent on getting to Sun and Moon when the game is released and the end result is a rushed ending. What I was particularly upset about is that it didn't get to the Battle Maison, which would have made for a great experience for Ash and company. And the other thing I didn't like is that Ash never used a Pokemon that can mega-evolve while in Kalos. He could have brought his Charizard to do that, but instead we get Ash-Greninja while Alain is the one with a Mega Charizard. While it was cool seeing Ash and Greninja syncing with each other, I would have preferred that things stick with the game.

And don't get me started on how terrible Sun and Moon is. From the moment I saw the promo poster, I knew that this show was going to be terrible as the character designs are awful (and Ash's striped shirt just looks tacky). I'm just not feeling up for more of this show, part of it is because this show is on Disney XD, which I don't have and have been watching the episodes as they come on the Pokemon website. But overall I just feel that this season is getting away from what it have been doing well.

And one last thought is that Ash should win at least one league as that is only the first step in becoming a Pokemon Master. I think there is a solid chance this happens in the Alola League given the circumstances surrounding it from the game, but nevertheless it continues to be frustrating to see how Ash loses in the league, whether it be because Team Rocket tired out their Pokemon prior to his match or Ash going up against a superteam of legendary Pokemon, or losing despite having a 6 against 5 advantage. But of course, these guys have the games in mind more than anything when it comes to making the anime for Pokemon.

Honestly, this is probably one of the longest, if not the longest, essay thread that I have seen on CR, and I have been a long time. So yeah. "LAWL"

What people need to understand (especially those still making ''Ash doesn't age'' jokes in 2017) is that Ash may be the official main character in the anime but Pikachu is the face of the entire franchise. I can’t imagine a realistic way for OLM to retire Ash and still keep Pikachu.

The Real MC

The best they can do is keep the status-quo in the main anime and make side-story spin-offs. One to keep bringing in new generation of fans every 3-4 years and the other to soothe the long time fans. And of course, along with the movies, all of them keep promoting the games and merchandise.

Or they can create a new Pikachu and have it be a new character's partner. That way they can reuse any Pikachu merchandise they have and call it a different Pikachu if they want.

Now that I think about it, I can see why Pikachu still hasn't evolved 6 leagues (7 if you count Orange) and 1 Battle Frontier later.

Yeah, I do wish that the series had been allowed to grow with its fan base. I was 14 when it started airing, and was fully done halfway through the Orange Islands. There was just no reason to continue to watch Ash lose all the time, and constantly reform his team to advertise for the newest game.

I think the last straw for me was losing Pidgeot, actually. I just remember having this sudden revelation that there will never be growth in this series, and any further viewing would end up feeling like time wasted.

I got through about 2/3rds of the OP (a proud accomplishment!), but I get the gist that I was probably correct to leave the franchise at that point.

Hello everyone

I just want to thank everyone who has commented on this thread and the reception my essay has received. I assure you that I will respond to a select amount of posts, and let you know that I have not forgotten this thread.

My position on the Pokémon anime has not changed.

OP's points are good. It's pretty much the reason why I stopped watching the Pokemon anime. And for those of you throwing up this excuse:

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic actually has great writing and character development, and is a hit for that very reason. Let that sink in for a minute.

While I can see your point, I also don't see how they could make any major changes to the anime that wouldn't be to their detriment. The show accomplishes what it sets out to do - sell games and merchandise to kids.

Rather that aging up Ash, wouldn't it be a better choice to do something like Pokemon Generations, but in a full length show? Plenty of the older fans were drawn in by Pokemon Go. A similar spin-off that is set in the pokemon world, but doesn't follow the game's plot/standard challenge league formula might work surprisingly well. There's tons of NPC characters that lead interesting lives and hold interesting pokemon-related jobs. It might not please long time fans, but it gives the adult fans something else to focus on that actually targets their needs. Something that can actually change for them without alienating the younger viewers.

I grew up along with the Pokemons and especially of course Pikachu! I loved them so much that when I started working in paper writing service the first my essay I wrote about the PIKACHU! But Pokemon Go I did not like to play like the majority of my friends!

Ash will never amount to anything as long as he can be a CASH COW. MLP is also a cash cow, the series was made to sell Hasbro Merchandise just like all the other series it has.

If it ain't broke why fix it? (imo it is but still, money keeps flowing and stupid ass kids still watch it)
