Why is this a thing? Could it just not as easily be that they did not want to stir an outrage response from extreme leftists over such a mild thing, or that they and most likely himself want to avoid memetic trends?

Remember:

-Robert Lee was not fired from his job, he was simply asked to move to another game not held at UVA, in Charlottesville.

-Charlottseville initial rioting was concerning the removal of confederate statues, including General Robert E. Lee.

-That we live in the post-Harambe era, and you can see how saturated the internet has become over a goddamn gorilla.

-Harambe is dead at the very least, what would Robert Lee do as a living person with all this newfound and likely unwanted fame? What if some extreme leftist attacks him on extremely tenuous logic?

-The reason for not telling anyone is a very good one: To avoid angering extreme right wing people. So, either potentially offend extreme members of the left by having him do a play by play, or anger members of the right by appearing to cater to left wing individuals. Seems like a catch-22.

-Robert Lee appears to have willingly accepted this "relocation". What reason do we have to get enraged on his behalf?

Why throw a fit over such a minor change done precisely avoid an outrage? In fact, you can say the extreme leftists may be willing to attack him. Remember, people can be are stupid and not well informed. It is also possible that, maybe, not all of us wants to be the next Scumbag Steve or Count To Potato Girl.

Honestly, I cannot even say the political alignment of the douche that leaked this, but this persistent search for confirming the extremity of our beliefs has us elevating the opposing side to boogeymen. You may distrust ESPN, but I have to ask "What proof can we act on that we should not believe them in this case?"

The act in itself is barely worth a mention, and the concept of principles is hardly what I would call illogical or immoral.

They reassigned him because the optics were bad. I don't see how this is worth throwing a tantrum over.

"The optics were bad"

This is the problem.

America has a highly militarised police force, any citizens pulling down statues should have been arrested as soon as the first one came down. The media should have reported "What are these idiots doing? They deserve jail"

Instead you got riots.

Do you think the vandals (yes, we're almost at the point of barbarian raids now) would have been let do this if they'd been Trump supporting MAGA hat wearers?

The American mainstream media are pandering to these people because they have the "correct" politics. And the uninformed public are believing them because, what other information do they have?

Now I don't know how physical sports calls it's games in the US, but I don't recall football commentators in Europe using each others full names. The most likely thing would be Robert Lee as a tag in the intro then the other guy calling him Rob for the entire match.

This was a non-issue that ESPN made an issue.

This poor guy is going to be double checked and reconsidered every time a game is held after a political riot now. Because of his name.

I don't understand the mentality of company higher-ups these days. I thought you had to have some willpower and drive to get to a decision making level in a company. I would expect any xEO level employee to laugh at the idea of switching a guy base don his name. But I guess when the Financial markets control your quarterly bonuses then the will of Twitter is the most important thing in the world.

Shakespeare penned his Great Truth hundreds of years ago. The world has changed. Maybe the lawyers can go second.

I imagine they might have his name worded under his figure during playtime reviews, if the football games I have briefly watched with John Madden were any indicator. American football is king here in the United States, and I have not seen much of the popularity in other countries.

There are many observations made that point out political pandering is often done to hit a market demographic, as most young people are quite liberal or progressive, as well as having more disposable income and various other thing. I consider it more profit oriented if anything, but maybe I am a bit optimistic or biased.

That being said, sometimes one have to placate idiots. Shows like Modern Family and Last Man Standing often hit the more vanilla side of politics, with gays being generally supported or not cared for by many people on many sides (Cared for is a hint, as many would not buy into what can be considered a gimmick), as well as Tim Allen's show making more of a viewership among older viewers versus the more incendiary firebrands cropping up in the right today by talking about issues outside of the youthful conservative purview.

Here is the latest victim of political correctness. "Gone with the Wind" has been pulled from theater for being racially insensitive.

Does this mean that they will want to rescind the academy award that the woman who played Mammy received?

SJW supporters/sympathizers just doing what they do best. If you are Chinese with the Lee last name . Please consider picking Robert as your first name when you are naturalized -- so you can always pull the victim card and ask these sjws to check their privileges in return

Better yet-- If you are a Chinese woman with the Lee last name-- Changing it to Robert E LEE will grant you a lot of cards to use-- you can sue them for discrimnation or have them going to jail like when they used the wrong pronoun!! There's nothing wrong with a woman having Robert for first name.

Robert E. Lee -- A Chinese American woman -- let see how they will respond ?

My mother is half Asian. I don't know if she will agree and if there's a limit to how many times you can change your name legally.. but It would be fun if she changed her name to Robert E. Lee for a few years let see how many people will be triggered. I'm only 1/4 so it might not be that obvious...

If you look at these protests/riots-- you will see few Asians --- wonder why? go ask one
