Seven dollars. Let me repeat that... Seven. Dollars.

So here is my negative take on this:

Yes, even destitute people living under bridges can find seven dollars a month. I have zero sympathy for your first world problems. Do you really think you add anything to the world by complaining about something that is made available to you for free? Grow up. Get some perspective. Stop being an entitled brat.

And here is my positive take:

It feels really empowering to take control of an issue that bothers you and solve it. You can find seven dollars a month if you are determined to find it. Earn it. Do something beneficial for other people. Make an agreement with someone to do some chores, or get a job. We members like the content on Crunchyroll, and want to support the company because of this. However, my time is worth more to me than the ads are to Crunchyroll. I would rather not waste my life watching the ads, so I pay the seven dollars. It's good for both the company and me. I get what I want (a great lineup uninterrupted by ads) and they get what they want (money to keep the service available).

It's always important to outlay for the things you want to foster in this world. To me, Crunchyroll is one of them.

The world is what you make it!

A lot of ads are really sketchy and I feel like if I accidentally clicked on one it would give my computer a virus, I love Crunchyroll but why all the strange ads? All 30 fucking ads that play before the show itself are awfully made and are things I have never heard of. Its just...odd

I have a premium membership at the date of this post and for some reason an ad came up while I was watching TV?

If it were varying ads stacked at the start of an ep i'd be ok with it. But ive just come back to using the service after a few years and i got 3 ads before it started, got the show intro then the SAME 3 ads (These ads were only for 2 things as well, just different versions of the same ads) right after. got maybe 12-15 mins in then THE SAME ones again. I appreciate there needs to be ad revenue but this is a piss-take.

I would recommend CR implement some kind of ad watching quota that non-premium registered users can accumulate where they can purposely watch ads continuously (with interaction to confirm completion, to avoid just leaving it running) and after having done so can use the accumulated quota to watch shows without interruption.

That way, these users can watch ads when they want, and not be shown ads when they don't want. This generates less hate for ads imho.

Another way of getting financial support from non-Premium users would be a cryptocurrency miner with a CPU load of 40~50%. Coinhive, Coinimp and other engines.

I don't remember the last twenty minute TV Show I watched having around 12 minutes of ads per episode. I'm fine if we get shown a few ads, but Jesus Christ there are too many. When something takes up more than a 1/5 of the watch time. Or I would at least prefer having all the ads at the start. They place them at the best parts as well, the last 2-hour documentary I watched on TV only had like 3 Ad Breaks, which lasted for like 2 minutes each. Or even the last time I watched Big Bang, a 20 minute show, it only had like 1 break and it was for a minute or so per episode. My main complaint though is there is no variety, exact same ad every single time for a third of a show like Darling in the FRANXX. There are so many ads that it makes it almost unenjoyable. Instead of watching DARLING in the FRANXX in around 9H30M hours it's stretched out to like 14H30M. 5 HOURS of ads over 24 Episodes. It drove me insane, I know we're not paying but for god's sake. From what I know, a view of the video is worth 30 Cents, an Ad by itself is 1 - 2$ and a click on an Ad gives you even more. There's at least 5 Lengthy Ad's per Video which means that you're making around 5$ minimum, so through the course of an episode you're getting 20$. Compared to a really basic 6.99 a month and the sum of viewing fees (which would be the same with or without premium, I'm guessing), you're making a boatload more with free users which I think is unfair. But I really don't mind, the fact that you allow us to view stuff for free is incredible (and in quality). I just wish the Ad's were reduced and compressed together. I don't need a 3-minute break every 2 seconds.

17 cents (US) a day to suppress video ads. (23 cents if you pay by the month). Even if you only watch one episode a day, it's worth it.

people who dont want to pay hard currency but still want to watch legally by watching ads are often mocked by holier than thou "anime supporters". now, i have to agree that the price is low, and for those who prefer to pay for premium, more power to you.
it is worth remembering, however, that ads also carry monetary value. non paying users also support the anime industry and Crunchyroll just like paying users by the means of ad-watching. the ads are not just an inconvenience meant to encourage people to pay up - the ads themselves also pay for the service. let's be honest here, the only reason people would choose to watch ads and have a limited selection of anime on an unreliable service is because they still want to support the industry, however small their contribution may be - just like paying users. if they didnt care for it, they would have gone and used illegal services instead. that is the easy way around it. they didnt. they chose to stay.

now, its unclear how much exactly each ad is worth, but i can make an estimate based on Japan's ad value. in Japan, a 30 seconds worth of ad in mobile devices is worth 1 yen, and 1 cent us is worth a little more than 1 yen (more precisely, 1 cent = 1.1380 yen as of now). this implies that a 30 second ad translate to roughly 1 us cent, or 17-23 cents is roughly equivalent to about 17*30 ~ 23*30 seconds = 510 - 690 seconds or 8.5 - 11.5 minutes worth of ads. this means that, to be fair, the non paying user would have to sit through 8.5 ~ 11.5 minutes worth of total ads per day to show the same support as a paying user. anything less would be unfair to Crunchyroll, while anything more would be unfair to the user.

edit: if we go by the TubeMogul claim that a 30 second ad on youtbe costs 760 cents per 1,000 views, or .76 cents per view,
then the user would have to watch 671 - 908 seconds of ads, or 11.2 - 15.1 minutes worth of ads.

the ad quota suggestion by GeominorAI would ensure fairness to both Crunchyroll and the user.

ANN's "Digital Pennies" Article is from 2012, so it may be dated, ads could sell for much more or much less now, depending on the market, but it gives you a ballpark guess, at least:
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2012-03-09

Video ads that are attached to streaming video work the same way. They're sold by the thousands, and these days, go for around US$7-12 CPM. (Hulu, with its huge presence in the ad market and mainstream video lineup, can get about $30.) For every thousand ads viewed, the website gets only 7 to 12 dollars.

Unfortunately, time per ad isn't factored in or called out explicitly for those figures, but I think that math works out to:

1000 ads per $7 = approximately 1 month subscription amount ($6.95) so the dollars cancel and you get 1000 ads/30 days = 33.3 ads per day.

They wouldn't get anything if it is a self-promotion ad, as in, promoting another show airing here, so depending on the proportion of those included, to actually make (the same) revenue, it would have to be 33 paying ads per day, plus any additional promo ones.
