Though honestly, I imagine half the hate in that FSN is a "horrible" follow up to Zero. (Despite the whole prequel thing, FSN being sold first in 2004) Too many jarring differences with how shared characters are used, most likely, given the whole route thing. I would not hold it against them.

Well Zero was written by a different author than Fate Stay Night.

I haven't seen Zero yet, although the groundwork for it was certainly laid in the Visual Novel.

I've only read the Fate Route so far, although I know quite a lot about the Unlimited Blade Works Route and a tiny bit about the Heaven's Feel Route. I personally really like the Visual Novel. I happen to like the Fate Route as well, although it seems to be the least liked Route. I think one of the endings of the UBW route is the least depressing though. I think the relationship between Shirou and Artoria is more interesting than the relationship between Shirou and Rin, or even Sakura. Of course in the Fate Route, he is still open to a relationship with Rin, and there was the entire Three Way with Rin, Shirou and Artoria.

I haven't seen any of the shows 100% though. I have only watched about 7 episodes of Unlimited Budget Works and I really enjoyed it. I've also seen a few episodes of Fate/kaleid and it is more comedic to me than serious.

Exactly. That is the result, even though Nasu had a fair amount of input into Urobuchi's prequel. Though yes, one has to keep in mind that there are things in the visual novels that complement one another as well as expand Shirou and the fight to stay by his ideals, or whether or not he should have different ideals and all that.

Fate wise? Saber is nothing special in her route, which has not been "adapted" like UBW and Heaven's Feel, or soon anyway (Unless you want to count the first first movie). Even then, keep in mind the typical dating simulator aspects, most including how little heroines can appear in others route, and how much development is given. For Fate Stay Night, this means Rin is hardly developed except in UBW, while Saber is second fiddle in Heaven's Feel and UBW, and Sakura does not even make an appearance past the first hour in Saber's Route.

Saber has become much more iconic with Zero, and this is because it is a single narrative versus 3 alternate routes, and when you have a beloved character regressed into the foreground for a much faithful adaptation, people do become disappointed. (I am also sure 90% of UBW viewers have not played the Visual Novel either)

Hence the problem with adapting a novel that demands you play all of it, same reason why Ever17 will never get a great anime adaptation. It simply relies on the multiple route mechanic in visual novels with first person immersion that it cannot be done.

To note, Fate Kaleid is a spinoff, like Carnival Phantasm, and Fate Apocrypha, and...

Wow, I know so much for a series I do not even like.

It's hard to say between Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. Fate/Zero was strong from start to finish, and as for UBW, it started out on fire being some of the best stuff out there, it died down in the second half (though still way better than most of the other Fate stuff). Of course, having Gen Urobochi writing Zero made it really stand out, and having an antihero as the MC certainly adds more intrigue than anything. The two biggest problems with Zero are the way Kiritsugu's background is explained (that should have happened somewhere in the first half rather than this late in the game) and storytelling was a bit all over the place in the first half. UBW benefits from having an established story and does a much better job at laying the foundation, but the pacing is all over the place towards the end.

As for the rest of the Fate stuff that I watched, the original FSN had a decent story, but ideas were just thrown together really quickly in order to market this mega-franchise and didn't really settle in until late in the series with the biggest problem being that Kirei suddenly became a big menace from out of the blue. The UBW movie, well that's what the TV series reboot was for. Prisma Illya was a mixed bag as while 2wei! and 3rei!! were great seasons, the first season and 2wei! Herz were pretty lackluster, especially the third season where the ending was rushed as hell. Lastly, there's Grand Order, and let's just say that it was entertaining, but not exactly something in the same league. Of course, being a special intended to market the mobile game, not much was expected. That said, I'm hoping to see Second Order coming out and with Gudako in it. So while I do enjoy the rest of the Fate stuff, there are nowhere near in the same league as Zero and UBW TV.

I've never seen anyone defend UBW against Zero like you just did. I appreciate you.
