I'm a big fan of Nisio Isins' work, seen all of Medaka Box and most of the Monogatari series and I'm currently reading Kizumonogatari. Which, of course, is in English. The Japanese have a thing for puns, as the language makes them fairly easy to do due to the same word meaning many things or two words being written similarly. (Even Bakemonoatari is a play on words: Bakemono = Monster/Ghost and Monogatari = Story) The light novel translation tries it's best to explain the jokes, but it doesn't really come off as funny when the joke is explained.

So I pose a question: Could the Monogatari series be adapted if the jokes that only work in Japanese were replaced with English wordplays or puns with the original context intact? And if you have any ideas for translated jokes, post them below!

Could it be dubbed? Sure. With wordplay and puns? Sure. A one-to-one translation? Not really.

Occasionally it can work. A fan sub translated Bakemonogatari as "Ghostory", which is pretty on the nose.

Could it be dubbed? Possibly. It just wouldn't be as good since far too many of the jokes and even some important dialogue lose their meaning. Subs sometimes help them make sense to us by putting certain translations in parentheses so we can understand the meaning or context. Other jokes can be changed and still have the same effect, such as the Black Hanekawa tongue twister. They were saying a tongue twister involving the number 7. That's probably one of the few easy ones since you could turn it into any tongue twister in whatever language a dub would be in. Even then, it would be virtually impossible to make a successful dub of a series that's deeply reliant on Japanese culture to understand most of what's going on.

Edit: What the hell? MadeDragon started his post almost identical to mine when we were just seconds apart.

Would it really be worth it to get rid of, for example, Hachikuji's kami(god)mashita in the last series? I'm reading the books translated and they're just missing... something.

It could but I feel a lot of things would be lost in translation and so on.

Just consider if scenes like him brushing his sister's teeth could work well.

I think any series can be dubbed. The question is whether or not it will be cancer.
