"Sweetness and Lightning" Makes a Good Start for "Animenome" Slot

Taro Iwasaki (One Week Friends) directs the slice of life series for TMS Entertainment

The ongoing TV anime adaptation of Gido Amagakure's Amama to Inazuma/Sweetness and Lightning manga has recorded exceptionally high rating for a slice-of-life TV anime in a late-night programming block. In Japan, the Taro Iwasaki (One Week Friends)-directed series has been aired on Tokyo MX, Yomiuri TV, and BS 11 since early July, and the viewing rating for its fourth episode on Yomiuri TV (for the Kansai region) aired on July 26 was an amazing 4%, which was a huge number for the Monday midnight broadcast.

The anime has also been well-received on Japanese streaming services. In Japan, it has been available on 27 streaming services and its viewers have been increasing as the episodes go on. It took the first place twice (July 27, August 3) in the daily ranking of NTT Docomo's dAnime Store, and also became the No.1 title in its weekly ranking (July 18-31). In addition, its first episode has been already viewed over 640,000 times on Nico Nico Douga, becoming one of the most viewed anime episode in the

July 2016 season. Even after the episodes are charged from its second episode, the series has been

purchased for a total of 10,000 times.

Amama to Inazuma/Sweetness and Lightning is the first anime series for the "Animenome" broadcast slot

launched by five Japanese companies (TMS Entertainment, Shin-Ei Animation, East Japan Marketing &

Communications, Sumitomo Corporation, and Asmik Ace Entertainment) last month. The press release

explained the concept of the joint project as below:

"Animenome" was planned by TMS Entertainment, Shin-Ei Animation, East Japan Marketing & Communications,

Sumitomo Corporation, and Asmik Ace Entertainment, and the five individual companies will team up to produce

anime shows as a new anime business model. "Animenome" in Japanese can be translated as "Anime’s Eye."

"Eye" means the center of things, as in "eye of a storm." The anime industry is just like a storm, with countless

shows starting and ending every year. This project’s concept focuses on creating a sensation at the center of the

tough anime industry and cultivating new content.

The second anime series from the project is TRICKSTER – From Edogawa Ranpo’s "The Boy Detectives

Club" slated for this October.
