Woah baby this might be good
So if you've read any of my other reviews you'll know that I'm not that impressed by animes that seem generic and don't stand out. Honestly, who likes watching that stuff all the time? Well have no fears...Golden Kamuy is here for you!

The story is pretty simple and seems like it will progress in an easy to follow manner. A Japanese soldier is told of a way to find a treasure beyond his ...

I was about to pass on this
In the opening scenes, it's so bloody, and there's a war going on. I thought no thanks. The MC is crazy and blood-thirsty. Then the war was over, and the story got a whole lot better. One person pegged it. He said the MC is complex and he doesn't know what to make of him. So true. That's rare in anime.

The MC seems like a good person one minute and an evil one the next. You can't seem to make ...

The Golden Manga Finally gets an Anime
I'm a big fan of the manga series right now. Like, A BIG FAN. This is a quality historic, action seinen that is educational, intense, hilarious, and tragic. Each character is enjoyable, but not everybody is a good person, including our main protagonist, Sugimoto the Immortal. And the art....is too good.
The minute I saw that notification about the anime, I was like, "GET HYPE! THE ANIME IS ...

  • A rare surprise [the five more characters needed to pass title muster]
I added this show to my list because there was so little that I wanted to watch in the Crunchyroll spring lineup. And what a lineup of dreck - "Comic Girls," more horse girls, and people who are abusive and cold but actually really love you.

But back to Golden Kamuy. This was a very pleasant [and bloody] surprise and I am looking forward to the rest of it.

A Cool Premise Wasted on Poor Writing and Directing
The horrendous cg bear was the least of this trash fire's problems.
The episode opens on a serviceable flashback to the Russo Japanese War with Sugimoto killing lots of dudes and screaming, "I'm Sugimoto the Immortal!" which was honestly pretty cringey. Then it cuts to the drunk dude recapping all of it. "You were in the Russo Japanese War, you killed alot of guys, you're Sugimoto the Immortal" ...

Excellent Premise- Poor Execution BUT Can it improve?
I'm holding out some hope on this one. I definitely enjoyed watching the opening episode- the story is interesting although it's explained through exposition rather than revealed through visuals, I'm a sucker for anything historical related especially C20... but there were so many problems with it that can persist and ruin the anime, or maybe that was just a clumsy first episode and it will smooth ...

  • Critical first take!
    Episode 1
My personal theory on rating and commenting is this: if it aint fit let it sit (no comment necessary) or give it 5 until it takes a dive. This is a rare occasion where it's in between but a comment is warranted. In a first episode I look for something that catches my attention and this premise hooked me.The MC looks like he has potential to be a good round character. Some of the ...

    A Golden First Episode
I've never been this sure an anime is must-watch after a single episode.

A HUGE amount of information was given in the first episode, but it was never rushed. We got not only backstory, but the outline of the whole self-contained story arc. All this info was effortlessly given while introducing unforgettable characters and the guiding metaphor of the Wenkamuy in a few strong action ...

A Guide to Ainu Traditional Cooking & Skinning People for Treasure Maps
About a century ago, the Japanese government finished colonising Hokkaido and declared the Ainu officially extinct. It was only fairly recently that people with Ainu ancestry started to reclaim their language and heritage so it's great to see an anime like this.

And this anime is actually good, so far. So good I watched it twice. It's straightforward with a simple plot of revenge and money, ...

    An interesting adventure begins
The drawing has it's own feel, and is pretty good. Animation is solid. Significant violence. A former soldier known for his tenacity joins forces with an Ainu girl, in what will be a bloody race to find a treasure.

The feel is pretty good. The dialogue is good, and nothing feels cliched. It's always a pleasure to step into something that feels new.
Really the only downside in episode 1 was the ...
