KanColle, or Kantai Collection, is based off of an online web browser game, mostly popular in Japan.
Plot - 8/10
This series follows the light destroyer Fubuki, in a world where humanity faces the threat of creatures called Abyssals. The Abyssals have taken over the seas and only girls with the souls of historical naval vessels are capable of countering them. The plot follows Fubuki as she settles in at the naval base, making friends and slowly but surely working up her fighting abilities. Over the course of the episodes, we watch the fleet girls fight and win against the Abyssals along with a mysterious many of them feel that seems to be attempting to make them lose the fight.
Characters - 8/10
The characters of this series are well flushed out and all have personalities of their own. All of the characters are a certain type of battleship, ranging from light destroyers, aircraft carriers, heavy destroyers, light and heavy cruisers, and battleships. There were a couple characters whose personalities grated on me but they were characters with less screen time than the others so they did not take away from my enjoyment of the characters. Fubuki, the main character, had strong character development over the course of the 12 episodes of the series and allowed me to actually see something being accomplished by her through the events of the series.
Setting - 9/10
The setting of this series is perhaps one of my most liked settings of all the anime that I have seen so far. The setting is based on the modern world, with the only difference being the invasion of the Abyssals. This lack of a complete fantasy world was to my liking as I prefer animes that take place in the modern world or at least the closest possible for the plot of the series.
Art - 8/10
The art of this series was better than I thought that it would be when I learned that it was based off of a Flash online web browser game. For the very reason of the art usually being subpar compared to what I am used to with animes based on games, I usually do not watch them but I decided to take a chance with this one and was impressed.
Sound - 8/10
The sound of this series was to my liking. The opening and the ending songs were to my liking. They went well with the plot and the events in each of the episodes of the series. The background music was well chosen for the moments when there was background music.
Enjoyment - 9/10
My enjoyment of this series was better than I first thought it would be. I find myself actually looking forward to seeing a second season of this series, as was promised at the end of this first season. Although, judging by the fact that no date has been announced for a second season, I don't hold my breath for seeing another season for awhile.
Overall - 7/10
Overall, this series is worth watching if you are one who enjoys watching slice of life anime, although I will admit that that genre is not one that I usually find myself watching. Although, I will warn that some may find the premise of the Abyssals and the girls having the souls of naval vessels may not be something just anyone can get behind and enjoy.
