Last month, GKIDS announced plans to bring the Modest Heroes: Ponoc Short Films Theatre, Volume 1 anime anthology to select cinemas throughout the United States. Mary and the Witch's Flower is the first film by Ponoc, a studio built by ex-Ghibli staffers to carry on its legacy. Based on a story by famous British novelist Mary Stewart and developed with the trademark Ghibli care, this film has the heart and soul of their legacy film to match the aesthetics, but how well did Ponoc live up to their auspicious legacy?
