One Piece Film: Red Overtakes Film Z to Be the Highest-Grossing Anime Film in Franchise

The blockbuster has reached 7 billion yen, 5 million admits

One Piece Film: Red

It was literally only yesterday that we mused that One Piece Film: Red would soon become the highest-grossing film in the anime franchise and today the official Twitter account revealed that musing to be fact, with Film: Red overtaking One Piece Film: Z to be the highest-grossing film in the One Piece franchise in only 10 days. Truly a momentous occasion for the seafaring franchise inspired by the manga by Eiichiro Oda.

The official One Piece Film: Red Twitter account also announced that the film had passed 7 billion yen (US$52.97 million) at the Japanese box office with over 5 million tickets sold

For comparison, One Piece Film: Z made 6.87 billion yen back in 2012, which was when the One Piece manga was on the sales charts and the series had its biggest push yet, but even then the overwhelming promotion for One Piece Film: Red, which includes all of Ado's singles that are topping charts around the world, seems to have done the trick of taking down Film: Z.

As for where One Piece Film: Red will land on the box office charts once the water settles? The film is tracking higher than JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 was earlier in the year in the same time frame and depending on how next week goes after the Japanese holiday period, could be looking at reaching 15 billion yen in box office takings.

One Piece Film: Red opened in Japanese theaters on August 6. Crunchyroll, who'll be releasing the film internationally across the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand sometime this fall, describes the seafaring musical adventure as such:

Uta —the most beloved singer in the world. Renowned for concealing her own identity when performing, her voice has come to be described as “otherworldly.” Now, for the first time ever, Uta will reveal herself to the world at a live concert. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans—excited pirates, the Navy watching closely, and the Straw Hats led by Luffy who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance—the voice that the whole world has been waiting for is about to resound. The story begins with the shocking fact that she is Shanks' daughter.

The One Piece TV anime is also still going strong, with over 1,000 episodes of the series streaming right here on Crunchyroll, with new episodes coming out as they air in Japan.
