Not for the faint of heart
Shigurui is the anime to watch if you are a fan of horror. if this anime makes you feel any type of way, then I feel the writer did everything right. A lot of horror creations always end up very lackluster, that is not Shigurui. This anime is all about the Samurai way, live by the sword and die by the sword. Placed in a horrific edo period of Japan where these men are literally demons on ...

    Horrifying, revolting stuff, done beautifully
Let me be clear that the source material for this show is a horrifying, revolting, disturbing portrait of continuous gore, sadism, misogyny, brutality and insanity. The manga author reveled in illustrating some truly disgusting depictions of wounds, injuries, illnesses and deformities. Everyone is just truly awful to each other and even the most sympathetic characters make your skin crawl. How ...

unique, but not quite fleshed out
I've watched a lot of anime, but this one is one of the most unique out of all of the ones that I have watched. I've never seen an anime that is this violent, explicit, and drenched in darkness and stark realism. This is probably the most realistic samurai anime that one will ever see. Fights end quickly and characters die in gruesome fashion. The animation and framing of the scenes make it so ...

Horrifying, revolting stuff, done beautifully - Reply?
The review title was stolen from an earlier, informative, and wonderful review by FarmerJimbo. Sorry for stealing and thank you. I feel like this review is very much a reply to and reflection of theirs.

I can't speak about the source material since I have no experience with it. I have watched this anime twice. Disconnected by a year or two. My first experience was similar to ...

Read this back in High school
So reading the manga doesn't really do justice as far as picturing how it would look if ever animated and this is the only and probably will be the best adaption(the manga had some really awful stuff that obviously won't be animated) of this series in an anime format. This really shows you a certain side of humanity you didn't think it could be thought of but yea the author is very creative and ...

  • Perfect. Could watch over and over.
Beautiful music and theme. Excellent pacing. Violent and brutal. Nice politics and intrigue. A mixture of quiet, relaxing pacing, and brutality. Not sure what else one would want. You may love it or hate it, but you have to admire the style. For me, I love the mixture of very silent moments and quick and rapid violence. What can I say, I'm a romantic.

  • Land me Edo era Japan
NEVER, and I mean never will you have a more visceral experience. I bought this on blu ray. History, art, music.. The dedication from my fav Fujiki and whirlwind that is Seigen are in my mind one of the best clashes ever written. Beware of the tiger cub, and watch the dragon unfold! Mad House rarely does ever disappoint. Grow a pair! (Ladies I love you and sorry, we all long for companionship).

    Left hanging....why?
This anime was incredibly frustrating to watch. Besides the fact that nearly every swordplay scene occurs in the span of a few seconds (from when the sword is actually swung), there are constant time jumps which leave you questioning the chronology of events in every episode. The worst part is how it literally never gives closure to the first episode which is the basis for the entire show! How ...

  • An amazing story and characters
This characters are interesting and could have an entire book written about each one. There are so many philosophical notions as to what a master (of something) is. Some examples: "the unparalleled understanding of ones tools as if they were their own body" or "the mastery of an art comes at an equal cost." This story deserves more attention.

  • Stories written in blood
Immerse yourself in a story that doesn't lay a path to narrative neatly and lays the horrific acts before you as you try to assign titles of good and evil. The points often lost in most stories are forefront in this tale of deceit, redemption and blood lust in such a complex twisted corridor. If surprise is an element most stories lack, let your mind be guided through this dark descent into the ...
