  • This anime is perfection
A flawless work. Perfection. Nothing to complain about. Everything from animation to story plot is masterful. I would implore people who don't watch drama and slice of life anime to give the genre a chance with this one. For everyone else who does watch those genres of anime, what are you waiting for? Watch it.

  • This is what I wish more anime were like
Anime is my guilty pleasure. A lot of tropes irritate me, but I watch shows anyway because I prefer them over current western animations.

But this... This is what I want anime to be. No blatant fanservice. No weird hair colors. A love triangle done RIGHT. Characters who are distinguished by their feelings and actions instead of labels. The first few episodes didn't get me hooked, but now ...

  • The Story My Life Needed
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju is a masterpiece.
In many people's lives, there is something worth living and fighting for. Whether it is a person, craft, or subject, there is a drive that shapes one's life.

In Showa (abbreviated for the show), Rakugo is what drives the protagonists. I know what you may be thinking, what on earth is Rakugo? Rakugo in itself delivers a story, like in the show. ...

  • Truly a grand story that unfolds masterfully.
I will not even begin to attempt to say that I understand Rakugo enough to have a true appreciation for this show, but I will say that this is a very human story. Very few times do I watch a show and see such fantastic use of context and relationships with such depth. The pacing of the show is absolutely perfect, making every twist and turn feel sudden but natural. The characters are written like ...

  • Excellent show etc etc
Really worth watching, especially in contrast to the idol/aspiring idol and other types of dreck on offer. This is actually a story for adults and told in an adult way. It has a good feeling for the complexity of human beings.
Probably the best of the anime I am currently watching on Crunchyroll and actually like, along with Yowamushi Pedal; Blue Exorcist; March Comes in Like a Lion; Gintama; ...

  • An Unusual and Sophisticated Masterpiece! A Gem Among Anime.
First off, I urge everyone to at least watch the first two episodes. I was reluctant to give this anime a try because the subject is so usual, I didn't know what to make of it. However, after watching the first two episodes, I was hooked!

The subject of this show is a group of artists who connect with the world and eachother through Rakugo, a traditional Japanese art form of storytelling. At ...

  • Great characters all around!
This anime is really driven by the different characters and their individual quirks and personalities. I really do appreciate how different these characters are compared to most other anime, it's more or less like you're following a story for each of the main characters separately, and each is very fun to trace. I especially like the subtlety around the dialog for each character, as most don't ...

  • Beautiful and enthralling
As others have said, this is not a show that will appeal to everyone, nor is it a show that is easily binge-watched. I often had to store up some emotional energy to make it through an episode.

That said, the payoff is so worth it. This is a gorgeous period drama touching on a number of themes; chief among them the inexorable march of time. The art is emotionally evocative, the characters ...

  • Fantastic Example of "Show, Don't Tell"
There's so much SGRS gets right: characters, drama, environment art. But where it truly excels is in it's masterful storytelling, reflecting the nature of the series' main subject, rakugo.

Rakugo is a Japanese performance art where the performer must sit before an audience and tell often hilarious stories using only their voice acting, upper body motions, and a fan as a prop. Rakugo is fairly ...
