After 7 episodes, its really slow, and the characters are dull. We're told (several times) how worthless the Rokuro (the male lead is), but that never really comes across. Considering the amount of time they waste in exposition and flashbacks, they definitely could have put in some more 'slice of life' elements to help the viewer actually understand Rokuro's basic worthlessness and tragic past (which we are teased with incessantly but still know nothing about, which I'm expecting to be disappointingly simple at this point). Maybe its a 'slow burn' type of thing, but if you only have enough emotion to put into one episode, it probably shouldn't be spread out over six. The fantasy elements are neat and could be interesting (and maybe are later) but at least at the beginning we're treated to the same moves and spells over and over, and expected to be amazed each time. The danger to the characters hasn't so far ever been actually convincing in the least, and the same plot element keeps getting fed to us over and over again ("seems like the kegare attacks are getting worse!") without any actual progression with them. They could honestly get away with that if there were actually a little more depth to the characters.
(aside: The 'evil laughter' of the kegare (interdimensional Demon things, which I don't think is explained ever as it is in the manga...though I did doze off a couple times so maybe I missed it) is reminiscent of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which also is a constant reminder of how this show isn't as good as that one (not that it should be, but doesn't help the cause).)
If it were between watching more Black Clover or this, I would definitely choose this, and as much as some people have hyped it, maybe it does get better over time. It is visually okay to look at, but, just like the characters, it always feels like they're dragging their feet on its potential, and maybe don't even care if they're going to get there.
Two stars for potential and for not being Nobunagun.
