Blue Exorcist

The following is a first look at the series Blue Exorcist from my blog Ultimateotaku.com

Summery

Humans live in the world of Assiah, demons in Gehenna. The two dimensions are not meant to interfere with each other, but demons still possess creatures in Assiah in spite of this. The humans who can fight these demons are known as exorcists. Rin Okumura is a boy who bears the curse of being Satan’s illegitimate son. His foster father sacrificed himself to save him from demons. To avenge his foster father’s death as well as to prove himself, Rin decides to follow the path of an exorcist.

First Look

I’ll say it outright in general here, I am a Christian. A lot of anime nowadays seems really Anti-Christan like in SnO were they portray God as being the bad guy, one of the only things I hate about the show. Blue Exorcist seems to be a complete 180 of that. Being a Pro-Christan anime I had to give it a look.

The first episode ends with Rin, ( played by Nobuhiko Okamoto who also voices Usui in Kaichō wa Maid-sama! and Yorito from Sola ) finding out he is the Lucifer’s son. The reason Lucifer bore a son is because no human is strong enough to contain his essence for very long, so he gave birth to Rin to be his container on Earth. This is not to Rin’s liking so he decides to fight his father and fate and by becoming an Exorcist, a very good idea for a plot. The characters seem likable enough with Rin being a good-for-nothing slacker, and his twin brother a very successful overachiever who wants to be a doctor.

The anime has a comedic tone to it, like when Rin is trying to explain away his scratches and bloody nose from a fight, he says he tripped down some stairs into a sexy girl and got a nosebleed, although it also seems like its going to be very action based.

A thng I don’t particuarly like is how the majority of the demons seem to be drawn. In my opinion demons should look like the hooded things from the song “Hellfire” not scribbles out of my math notebook, but I digress.

The series seems very good so far, and I think I’ll have to stick with it. This anime is a contender for my favorite anime of the spring line-up for sure. So is it worth watching? I’ll say yes. And hey if my First Look doesn’t convince ya, maybe the fact that it was #3 on the New York Times best selling manga list might.

Well, the first episode is a mediocre start.

It's a formula as old as, if not time, at least anime:
A) Teenage boy who can't do anything right
B) Has something strange and inexplicable happen to him
C) Who then discovers that he is special and has a calling; his clumsiness/anger/other social handicap stems from this.

This iteration involves some fanciful Christian and Kabbalah references, some boring or silly character designs paired with decent animation, and some serious cribbing of Mushishi's wonderfully strange spirits.

This looks like it will be a predictable action show; while there's nothing necessarily wrong with it, the first episode of Blue Exorcist does little to stand out from other shounen shows.

This series started of fast and to the point. We find out the origins of the main character and the goal he sets for himself. The anime at this point I hope will not plateau when he starts his training as most animes do as soon as a clear point has been made or a character enrolls in school. To me it is at a fork, could be good or could be bad, depending on the supporting cast ( please no annoying individuals). School is almost always dooming, in my opinion, for a show there isn't that much room to grow and the watcher is then stuck watching immature melodramatic scenes, with a gang of supercilious, stupid, or annoying children, in other words stereotype buffet. Or the other fork individuality and originality. I look forward to watching the next episode and hope that surprises will be in store.

( it is hard to judge anything when I have only seen two eps.)

I only got one issue, and that is that i've got to go to another site to watch this, since its restricted from my area.. Bummer... But to the review..

This anime will blow away anyones mind... Starts off so subtle, and then it goes haywire, with so many things to remember, and all the plots coming together, to start, and the bigger picture is revealed.. There is nothing unfathomable for anyone in this anime, but there is brainwork =)!..
I'd recommend this to anyone in a heartbeat, but i'd almost recommend anything, you don't know if you'll like it till you've watched it, thats my motto.. But ENJOY :D!

Okay, so you people are wondering if Blue Exorcist is good enough for you to watch, eh? Or your just here to see what other People think.... Well, Blue Exo* is becoming very popular and I'm starting to like it, too. It's almost like watching Fairy Tail, because Rin almost looks like Gray so much. Blue Exo's story line is quite interesting, but I feel that it's not very original, and the storyline seems to be so....so... unnatural. But don't get me wrong! Exo is a very good anime! The action is very great, due to the manga being hard to understand the action. Anyways, the music is otherwise good too. Characters are also good, but Rin just so much looks like gray... and I was trying to find a unique character(s). Like Twins, Possessed, kind of stuff. Overall, I give this anime four stars!! ★★★★☆

Still too early to write any proper reviews, being only 3 episodes in. SO I just decided to type one up regarding the other reviews on the site! Very high quality anime, the story has a rough start that didn't immediately grab my interest, and as far as the most current episode--it lacks main characters. You can learn much more just by watching the first episode, than reading unfinished reviews, so go ahead and do it already.

Blue Exorcist is a shounen anime about demons, exorcists and a pair of cute, teenage twin brothers. If you've seen shows like 'Soul Eater' and 'Hunter x Hunter' and enjoyed them, Blue Exorcist is for you. It's not breaking any molds with story telling, but the story is competent and the characters likeable so far, I really enjoyed the pathos involved in the first two episodes and the action scenes are excellent. There are fun characters designs that many a fangirl will appreciate, including a humorously pink car, attractive school uniforms, and handsome boys at every turn. I'm waiting until the female characters show up to make any character judgements, but they seem to be following the trend in shounen anime these days with attractive character designs that aren't totally sleazy, which is always appreciated.

So ladies, what is in this series for you specifically? Handsome male characters in school uniforms, boys with fantasy additions like pointed ears and strangely coloured eyes, cute animal familiars, an adorable older brother/younger brother relationship, and a nice building up of angst and struggle. A certain character with unusual traits also likes to wear hot pink and turn into a cute doggy, and is...well, let's just suggest ambiguity at this point. I think over the course of the series run, we'll see this show become a fanfiction writer's dream. For now, it's a very enjoyable shounen series that females are likely to enjoy that's easy on the eyes, and has lots of delicious male bonding between brothers. I give it four and a half...simply because some of the bg music was a little underwhelming. But hey, not everyone has Yokko Kanno.
