A mostly refreshing update on Dumas's timeless classic
**There are spoiler-ish items in the following text. You have been warned.**

Allow me to preface this by saying that Alexandre Dumas's novel The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my, if not my all-time, favorite works of fiction. I read the unabridged translation once a year. It, its rich assembly of characters, and the themes present throughout are truly timeless. It seems like every so ...

  • The Same Wine Poured Into a Different Bottle.
I was really into this book when I was younger, so when I watched this adaptation I was amazed and touched by how good it was. All the characters are perfect and personify the original characters' very essence. The media is different, and the setting is surrealistic, but the story of revenge and the unconquerable nature of the human spirit remains true to Duma's vision. That's why The Count of ...

  • Creepy with an Amazing Art Style
I have to admit, it's been a coupla years since I've seen this, so I'm going to be fairly vague about it.

It has an amazingly unique art style, where the texture of various clothes stay in place as the characters animate across them. It makes it all feel kinda trippy and magical.

The characters are fairly creepy, and I remember being riveted while watching it. The setting was also pretty ...

  • Not really The Count Of Monte Cristo
This was a disappointing series. It gives the impression that the series is one retold of TCOMC, but it's very different from the actual story, which the original is an amazing tale. So about 3/4 in, you're like "Wtf?"
Even when looking at this version from an "outside" perspective, as if it's something supposed to be very loosely based off the original (which like I said, it didn't seem that ...

To whom it may concern. eh-hem (My friends)
This anime is a favorite of mine, get it in 720p or more. To appreciate this, you'll need all the p you can get.
    Lol...
Anyways.. Great art if you can dig the style and of course the story is amazing. A+ on all that.
Sound is not all too great. Good soundtrack though (Aside from the awful open and end). As always, watch in original japanese.
Some gay stuff but I'm into it. Have fun.

    gankutsuo is supa tight
the textures and animation for gankutsuou are really original and layered, kind of resembling a kaleidoscope of textiles. this was my go-to favorite for so long, and it still holds a big place in my heart, for nostalgic reasons. i haven't read the count of monte cristo so i can't really say how accurate or inaccurate it is but i think anyone who likes anime that kind of stands out from the rest ...

an extremely amusing anime styled take on the count of monte cristo. the colors are vivid and exciting, the dialogue is fantastic, and the art style is entirely unique. One of the few anime i plan to rewatch again and again. i would recommend this to literally everyone i know.

  • I came for the Visuals. I stayed for the everything.
This anime, Gakutsuo, shall forever be remembered as 'that anime with the weird animation style.' But it's so much more than that! A compelling story of a man wronged by his former companions, sets out to get revenge in the most grand fashion. If I were to describe this anime in very few words, I would perhaps say 'some guy throws sh_t at the fan to get his enemies dirty, but than innocent people ...

    Goes in the wrong direction.
I wanted to like this anime, and I did - at first. I won't write a full review as I would be rewriting a lot of what has already been said. But, I feel someone needs to mention this since I haven't noticed anyone else saying it...

This anime ends up twisting the story of Monte Cristo into some kind of homosexual love affair between the two main characters without coming right out and saying it. ...
