Inu X Boku could just be a slice of life. The slice of life of a high school girl from a rich family who opts to move into an apartment by herself, but still supported by her family and their fortune, at the tender age of 15 because she wants to better herself. The main character, Ririchiyo Shirakiin, wants to better her social skills as she had developed a bad habit of telling everybody off regardless of whether they are being mean to her, or trying to be friendly to her. However, Inu X Boku is not just a slice of life.
The twist is that Ririchiyo and all the main characters have demon blood in them and can channel them to gain special abilities as well as transform. According to Ririchiyo, many of the families whose blood is mingled with demons are rich and part of the reason she developed the way she did was because her families demon blood runs the strongest in her. As a result, she was raised as something of a lucky charm of her family, with even her parents opting to isolate her and instead give their parental attention to her sister. Her parents believed that Ririchiyo's sister was the one who got the raw deal as she would have to live with constant comparison to Ririchiyo - the one who was endowed with the power of their Youkai ancestors. Needless to say that Ririchiyo saw things very differently and the nature of her family life was a big contributing factor to her personality flaw. The other contributing factor to Ririchiyo's personality flaw is that she knows that many people who are nice to her are only nice to her because of her family and their wealth.
So Ririchiyo moves into the Ayakashi Mansion, a complex that is presented to ordinary humans as a high security complex for rich people and celebrates but in truth is a complex built so that people with demon-blood can reside together and help each other. Especially since such half-demons are often targeted by full-blooded demons. As a result, many of the residents of Ayakashi Mansion have bodyguards or SS agents. SS agents are other half-demons with, I am guessing, more combat oriented powers and possible with families who aren't necessarily well off since they are working for the more wealthy residents of the complex. Ririchiyo had no intention of hiring an SS agent but arrives to find that her family had gotten her one: Soushi Miketsukami.
Miketsukami is a half-kitsune and one very devoted dog. He event asks Ririchiyo to think of him as her dog upon their first meeting. Ririchiyo cannot be brash with him as she is with others simply because you would have to be pretty messed-up to be cruel to a dog and it is established pretty early that Ririchiyo is not cruel and doesn't want to go around hurting people. As a result, Miketsukami rather effortlessly brings out her good side because he's a man unaccustomed to putting on airs and is genuinely devoted to Ririchiyo for who Ririchiyo is as a person, irrespective of her family, their position and wealth. Miketsukami claims his devotion is born from the fact that Ririchiyo saved him once but Ririchiyo cannot recall when she met Miketsukami before. However, I am sure we will learn that in due time. In the meantime, let us enjoy watching Ririchiyo come to understand that for unconditional love, you really can't beat a dog! ^.^
