A fun, action-y comedy that follows a young Magician in training, Takuto. A mishap in the first episode during a magic exam sets the stage for the adventures to follow.
Even though there is a lot of wackyness and a lot of otaku-based humor (figure collecting, moekko, etc), there is an underlying plot that is touched on in almost every episode. When the tone finally gets a bit more serious, its sudden enough to take you by surprise and make you concerned for the characters involved.
The production value is to be expected from a more recent anime. The animation is fluid, smooth and beautiful. Sound is crisp, and the voice acting sounds great (my japanese however is terrible).
The Magician's Academy is more a back drop than the focus of the show; which is more about the interactions and the relationships of the characters.
The characters are fun and memorable, even though they are at times.. flat. Not much in the way of character development, but you shouldn't be looking for that sort of thing in this genre.
In a few words: Funny and fun.
Pros: Funny, references to other anime
Cons: a bit of fan service (if you don't like that sort of thing), series is short
