I think the movie version demonstrated that it's really these "dull" episodes that have the story's heart. Galaxy Express 999 isn't an action series... It's supposed to be a sad, melancholy examination of the human condition.

So many of these episodes just seem dull after awhile. Maybe I'm just the kind of person that isn't happy unless something is getting the crap kicked out of it.
