This anime, Gundam Wing, was the first anime to ever get me to thinking. Sure, at the same time as this aired I was watching Digimon Adventure and Pokemon, but those were aired as Saturday Morning entertainment fodder. I first saw Gundam Wing ten years ago when Toonami was just getting off the ground, and watching it again on this site just brought back all sorts of memories.

But a review is about the merits of the show, not the reviewer's background.
The storyline is convoluted, twisting and turning and dragging its poor characters in directions that when I first watched it was hard to take it all in. Most of the story, I'll admit, has been colored by the multitudes of fanfictions out there exploring the series through other points of view. I was actually a bit frightened to watch the show again, knowing that it would inevitably be different than what had built up in my mind. But there we go with those background thins again. The show's plot twists kept me guessing throughout and, as an aspiring writer, I can appreciate the sort of hand it would take to craft these sorts of details. That is why I rated the storyline a 5.
Music... meh. Aside from the openings, not much of the music appealed to me. It was more catchy and upbeat than what you usually hear, but it was just a bit generic-sounding in my opinion. Contradicting that, however, the music ends up ultimately identifiable. You listen to it long enough and all it takes is a few notes for you to be thinking back on this series fondly. That's why I rated the music a 2.5
Characters next. Where to begin? The characters in this show have affected my life profoundly, the way their personalities meshed and clashed but ultimately complemented each other's weaknesses and faults. After debating between Heero, Duo, and Quatre I ultimately decided on Duo as a suitable role model, even going so far as to grow my own hair to emulate him. His attitude was just so darn appealing, devil may care but all the while completely serious underneath it all. I've even grown to appreciate Wufei, despite his initial views on women (and who knows, maybe he doesn't change them? I'm only on episode 43, after all). And outside of the main Gundam pilots there are admirable and well-rounded characters. Sally especially stood out in her speech to Wufei about why weak people fight too. And Relena... I will admit I was among the cadre that vehemently despised her. But, despite her portrayal in the show, it was the ending that made me see beyond the Heero-chasing, stubborn pacifist I had seen her as before. In the ending sequence she's playful, tugging on a rhino's tail and smirking gleefully.. One might argue that, as an independent ending sequence this might not reflect her personality, but I would disagree. It added another level of depth to an already deeply rendered personality. All of these factors led me to rate the characters highly, a 5.
The animation... it has its ups and downs. When it's up it's wonderful, breathtaking to look at, but when it's down it's at the bottom. Comparing it to animes released recently it might not stack up to much visually, but for the time it was an awesome bit of film. However... I'm spoiled to the cleaner, more detailed look of anime today. That's why I rated it a 3.5
Overall, it fell just shy of a full score. The music and the sometimes lackluster animation quality were detrimental to its outsanding plot and characters. All things considered, I'd have to give it a 4.5
