Mobile suit Zeta Gundam is not like most Mecha anime out there. Sure, it's has giant Robots, and colorful battles in space. However, the show has a message, that I believe most people miss, when viewing. The story is about a boy name Kamille Bidan. He is a angry young man, who is overcompensating for his very feminine name. I understand people hostility for the character, for I felt similar at first. However, the great thing about Kamille is his growth. He goes from a kid ready to fight the world, to a real hero that the series always needed. Under some certain circumstances he find himself caught up in a war, between the A.E.U.G, and the Titans. Not knowing really were he belongs, Kamille decides to join the A.E.U.G, and their fight against the corrupt Earth Federation government. Through out the series, we not only meet a whole new cast of characters, we also get to see some old favorites. The new characters play great and important roles through out the series. Emma Sheen being the older sibling Kamille never had, but always need. Fa Yuiry the girlfriend that keeps him ground. Quattro Bajeena the mentor, and Four the shade of gray in life. The main villains in the series is the cold-hearted Haman Karn, and the manipulating mastermind, Paptimus Scirocco. Both of them could win an Award for greatest villain in anime. Now, having all these characters would mean anything if they were all one dimensional. Each major character has so many layers to them. I'm on my 3rd watch through of the series, and I'm still finding new aspects in their character. The animation is great, and at times some of the best that 80s anime has to offer. The music, in my opinion is the greatest music in Gundam history. Shigeaki Saegusa has wrote an amazing score, that really in bodies the show's feel. The ending has brought on a lot of mixed feelings, mainly do to it's depressing nature. Being depressed at the time, the show's creator, Yoshiyuki Tomino, wrote his feelings into the ending. That really does show. Whether or not you agree on the choice of the climax, it is an ending you will never forget. Mobile suit Zeta Gundam is an outstanding anime, that delivers on every level, It has action, drama, romance, and most of all heart. It is truly deserving of it's legacy.
Yoshiyuki Tomino want to install a message, a message about leaving our hearts open. Only those who have their heart closed are truly lost. And the ones with them open, are those who make a difference in our world.
