This show was meant to be a guilty pleasure show and for those curious on KOEI's otome franchises this is a good start.

While not a great show, it IS better than it should be. I do hear people complaining about the main character, but I don't think they give her that much justice. She does develop over the two seasons into a person who does fight. People are expecting her to be a warrior babe at the end, but I find that hard for a girl who's basically supposed to be Jesus and is forced to potentially kill her best friend (love interest?). Although the men primarily fights for her, her powers and her involvement become key to their success. She doesn't just sit there.
I'm not a fan of the ending. It could have been handled better. I'm not complaining that she didn't "get with" anyone, as everyone else complains about, but the ending over all left some questions. Like wouldn't people still want to try to kill Nyx after all he's done? How did he survive a blow through the heart? It did leave an open-ended feeling that made be believe it was unresolved and there could be another season, but alas there wasn't.
The main guys are richly developed and I feel all got equal screen time, which made me believe the main character did have a connection of friendship at least with all of them.
The plot is sort of cookie cutter with a few curve balls, but there are some plot twists that do keep the series interesting, even though the culmination at times does seem flat. The first season does grind at times, but by the end of the first season through the second is when the wheels roll. It does focus on her personal struggle to fight.
As I've stated before, this show isn't supposed to be some epic drama (because remember this show's supposed to be for kids), it isn't supposed to be an awesome movie. It's more of a cult classic type show. It all depends how people take it in. For what was given, I wasn't expecting much, but it DID exceed my expectations. Other shows based on otomes are hit and miss in general. Although my perpetual skepticism is always in everything I review, I was pleasantly surprised.
As for critics of this show, I will say this show as just an anime is just average. But for the genre, I think this is decent in terms of character development and story telling. Animation gets weird at some points, but its good. Yet I don't understand people who criticize THIS show and go around and scream that La Corda D'Oro and Hanasakaru Seishounen are "great" shows. They are the same demons really, why treat one differently than the other. If you want to hate one, hate them all, not just the ones where the main character doesn't fit your mold. Everyone says the "meek" girl is so stereotypical. That's partially true, but conversely not EVERY girl needs be angry, angsty, or strong in order to be a good character. To me, the "meek" girls have more room to improve.
To summarize, it isn't a great show, but it is certainly better than it has it be. If you want a popcorn anime to watch for fun, this is a show to watch with action, adventure, and teasing pseudo-romance rolled in.
