Nyarko-san: Another Crawling Chaos

La verdad esta muy divertido como todos piensa que Nyaruko rechaza a Yasaka pero mas cuando esta Nyaruko esta herida en el cuerpo de Yasaka y Yasaka diciéndole que no que la iba a proteger de todo como si hubiera muerto y luego nada mas la risa estilo como que ya lo tengo y se dan ese beso de lengua jajaja estuvo bien divertido y mas por que kuko y hasuta se quedaron como piedra por lo que resta del episodio jajaja pero lo mas divertido fue el beso de lengua xD

I went into this show with quite low expectations, I have seen a lot of things made into moe style girls, but Lovecraft? Also, the images I saw of it just weren't very mythos-inspired. However, having nothing else to watch, I gave it a try. If nothing else, I would get to watch Japanese voice actors try to pronounce "Nyarlathotep".

I have to say, this show was definitely a surprise! Within the first few minutes of the first episode they flex their Lovecraftian muscles in a flurry of cosmic references and even pull out some references to the (very good) tabletop game! Its a show for people who love Lovecraft, the jokes are there, they even draw some quite traditional mythos creatures in some scenes. They know the feel that the Mythos are supposed to have, and they go directly against it as often as possible.

Its a good thing too! I was worried the show would be bi-polar, trying to be horror one moment and moe the next, but this is 100% comedy. They wear the absurdness of the show as a badge of pride. The plot is paper-thin and silly, but well conveyed and internally consistent. Most importantly, it knows when its being dumb, and it knows not to take it too far.

By the time Cthugha and Hastur (Both quite recognizable, even as little girls) arrive, I was already a big fan of this series and its creative re-imagining of Lovecraft's Mythos. Its not smart, or high brow, but it is fun.

PS: Nyarko-san's voice actress has amazing english and quite a good grasp on how to pronounce the names of many of the Mythos' creatures, something even English speaking fans mix up.

Comedy shows are truly my forte, and Nyarko-san: Another Crawling Chaos doesn't disappoint! This show is about normal boy Mahiro being saved by the awkwardly clingy Nyarko. That is right... Nyarko... as in Nyarlathotep. Now, I'm not a master of H.P. Lovecraft knowledge... which goes to show just how great the show is, since even though I don't understand their references, it is well-explained and still comes off as good.

The cast of characters itself is wonderful in its own right. Mahiro is likable and doomed to be acquainted with Nyarko who is hilariously clingy and strong. There is also Kuuko who is a fiery girl with her eyes set on getting with Nyarko, Hasuta being a young boy who also strangely harbors awkward feelings for Mahiro, and Mahiro's game crazy mother! Beyond that there are more (and a lot of the evil and supporting characters are great) and all of these characters are funny and play off each other very well.

The art style is fitting even when it switches between demon fights and normality. The music is energetic and zany, just the way I like it. The plot is very romance meets comedy meets action and all of these are blended well. Even with the lot of H.P. Lovecraft references, there is still plenty of Anime references, slapstick humor, Video Game references, etc. to be enjoyed.

The Action-Comedy-Romance balance as I said was good, but it started to hit more romantic comedy and forgot all about a lot of the action during the middle point of the show. From there it got a little better by slapping some more action in later but even then it was a little weak on the full balance around that point, so I would hope that if a second season was made that it would adhere to the great balance of Action-Comedy-Romance that the beginning so greatly had.

Some may be off put by the large amount of references but I was perfectly fine with them and thought it was great. In the end, Nyarko-san is well worth your viewership, so please check it out. Otherwise you will feel the pain of many forks... and maybe some Space CQC!

Thought I'd write a review SINCE at first glance this probably looks a lot like a standard harem anime with magic-powered girls. Fortunately, it kindly doesn't stick to any sort of stereotype.

It's primarily a comedy, and a goofy one at that, with enough parody and cultural/anime references to keep your head spinning. If you've seen any number of animes before, you'll probably keep finding yourself thinking, "Haven't I seen a similar scene before?" It's a funny romp.

But better than that is the characters. Our female lead is Nyarko, a supernatural girl-creature with some weird mission. I don't remember what it was--but who cares anyway? She thinks that our male lead (Mahiro) is the perfect hunk for her, and does all she can to get him to "make babies" with her.

If you're used to anime rom-coms by now, you probably think you know how this is going to play out. But you'll probably be wrong. Refreshingly, Mahiro is NOT a spineless, weak lump of flesh. He counters Nyarko's shameless advances with a fist to the face or a fork to the hand. While I don't advocate violence against girls, it's good to see the guy, FOR ONCE, not going perv-out over the girls. And actually asserting himself. The way I see it, he treats her as an equal (albeit a pesky one) rather than a sacred or brainless female who should be constantly pandered to.

So far, Kuko (or however you spell her name) and Hasuta round out the rest of Mahiro's supernatural "harem," so to speak. Although Hasuta is a shota, and Kuko wants to make HER babies with Nyarko. Watch for more details.

There's a lot of goofiness and laugh-out-loud moments, but also interesting characters. This isn't the type of anime I usually enjoy, but there's so many refreshing aspects, that I'm having a lot of fun with it.
