I am not up to date on Japanese culture, but the mythology seems relatively consistent. About the only thing this story could use would be a more over-reaching plot. Though there are a few episodes that tie things together, it mostly seems to be a series of semi-related episodes all of which could stand on their own.
It is hard to describe this anime, because no one particular piece stands out any more than any other. It seems like the authors/illustrators managed to take a number of stock character and situations and make something worthwhile and unique about them. That says a lot about the quality of the anime. If your looking for a good quality show, I would recommend this.
While not as original as Angel Beats or DoraDora (which I highly recommend if you have not seen), the anime is well done.
