This is one of my first real (non fusion) historical Korean dramas that I’ve watched. So, please pardon my ignorance regarding some subject manners and characters in history.
As a casual viewer of Korean dramas, I thought this drama was interesting…to say the least. It had a lot of controversial undertones for a historical drama- perhaps more than some of the modern ones (dramas) airing today. Even though there were some taboo topics hinted at, teacher/student love and gay themes, I never thought the atmosphere was awkward at all. Surprisingly, I actually thought Moon Geun Young had amazing chemistry with both Moon Chae Won and Park Shin Yang. There were plenty of times I cried for all of these characters, MGY and PSY devotion to each other in particular had me bawling a number of times. And the only other Korean drama I have ever bawled for was the ending of Damo. So, I do have to give my props to this writer, this set of actors and most of all the director for handling this beautiful, emotionally complex story with such elegance and care.
Overall, I rate this drama 7.5/10.
