Many years have passed since a group of humans retreated to an artificial colony above the planet’s surface. Many years have passed since a group of humans retreated to an artificial colony above the planet’s surface. The colorful world that existed was ruined by human foolishness, making it unfit for human civilization. Much of the recorded history before the move has been forgotten, despite the numerous advances in technology. The last remaining information lies in the annals of data, much of it in corrupted formats. Determined to recover this data, the "Archive Excavation Department" works specifically to restore as much of it as possible. Long ago, the Department used to be excited and full of energy. Now, people only know that knowledge of the lost past can bring sadness.
Ura, a particularly motivated member of the department, works long hours to recover history. Riko lost her passion and desire to know long ago. Then one day, Ura comes upon a record that once decoded, completely changes the way he sees his world.

Beautiful, quiet, and melancholy

This is not something you should watch if you are feeling impatient. Sit down, with a cup of tea, and let it unravel in front of you. Pale Cocoon is unique, and feels like a classic Sci Fi book. It leaves you thinking and wondering what will become of the characters and the world... and a bit melancholy.

This Is A Must-See Anime?

Some people may speak to you of the premise, how it's a great story that will inspire or impress you. Others rave about the artistry and flow of animation.

Admittedly, it's now bad, but it's not the best that I've seen. The dismal opener with the ending leading to a promise of hope is nice, but I found myself preferring to find something more deep and intriguing with out people continued to ...

My sweet Pale Cocoon

Dear god I've forgotten how good this single OVA is and how it really stands out from the crowd time and time again. When I first saw Pale Cocoon I flipped because as a great lover of science fiction as a whole and as a lover of anime this combined them so perfectly. Dear god I've forgotten how good this single OVA is and how it really stands out from the crowd time and time again. When I first saw Pale Cocoon I flipped because as a great lover of science fiction as a whole and as a lover of anime this combined them so perfectly. It managed to have such a strong sci-fi plot (even if it was a short one) that made me feel like I was reading a short story by Phillip K Dick, and then it combined it with some stunning visuals that you could only ever get in anime. Overall the only thing that I can say about Pale Cocoon is bravo,you have managed to create one of the most fascinating anime I have ever seen. I would like to say though, if you are not a great lover of science fiction then this is not for you.

Dark, somber, and slow

The story is slow but it feels like it could happen in our time. They talk of how the world has lost its history because of something devastating and they have to piece threw the small ruminates of the archives in order to learn of the past. In the first part, we are introduced to the man male character and what his job is slowly, though it is still a lot of mystery. It made me want to know more. ...

The story is slow but it feels like it could happen in our time. They talk of how the world has lost its history because of something devastating and they have to piece threw the small ruminates of the archives in order to learn of the past. In the first part, we are introduced to the man male character and what his job is slowly, though it is still a lot of mystery. It made me want to know more.

The artwork is actually pretty nice, mixing 3D with the drawings well. Sometimes you can’t even tell that there is 3D. The artwork is dark, gray, and rather cold feeling. There really isn’t much to talk about other then that.

The music keeps its strange, slow, sad feeling al the way threw. There is one song that I would so want to have on my player. I won’t tell you what one but you will know once you hear it. There really isn’t much to say about it as well. It’s one of those shows that you have to watch to talk about. I would actually that anyone should watch this.

Excellent. Pale Cocoon is poignant. It's less than 24 minutes this story has an impact that few full lenght movies (animes or live action) have. It's well written and animated. An overall must see!

Es increíble ver cómo en 23 minutos pudieron crear una gran obra de animación, un cortometraje de los mejores que he visto, un muy buen manejo de la trama para que vayas descubriendo la historia poco a poco y sobretodo dejándote mucho a tu interpretación, con un final muy impactante, la música y el estilo de animación va muy acorde para la ocasión. Al acabar en verdad te hacer reflexionar mucho ...

Watch once, then watch again

Pale cocoon tells an interesting story in a round about way. You see the story unfurl more or less as if you were the main character as he uncovers bits and pieces of his people lost past. Watch it once, then after you seen what the world is like, go back and watch it again to see all the subtle details that you may have missed. It would only take one or two generations for people to forget that humanity fled the devastated earth to live on a lunar colony. The children born on the moon would not know any other life, especially if the previous generations where bitter/embarrassed/etc about what happened and actively tried to delete it from the history "books". I could easily see the majority deciding its better to forget what they lost and could never have again, instead of raising everyone to be all angsty and miserable about it.

Pale Cocoon - Short but Sweet

Although Pale Cocoon is only 23 minutes long, it is still very enjoyable. The animation is gorgeous. The music is nice. The story is able to be told in it's short time span.
I was left wanting more when it ended.

Okay, here's the deal, what I believe the writer was trying to attempt in Pale Cocoon, was not to undermine the intelligence of the audience. If anything I think what the writer tried to do was challange the viewer. It's a bit of a complicated story and the writer uses A LOT of hidden visual and rhetorical devices like repetition, symbolism, metaphors, etc... The fact that this show is ...

Okay, here's the deal, what I believe the writer was trying to attempt in Pale Cocoon, was not to undermine the intelligence of the audience. If anything I think what the writer tried to do was challange the viewer. It's a bit of a complicated story and the writer uses A LOT of hidden visual and rhetorical devices like repetition, symbolism, metaphors, etc... The fact that this show is subbed with English, probably makes it that much harder for the English viewer to see the point of this short animation. Not to mention, when not everything is explained (*spoilers* For example, "why did he go up there?" "how did they forget they were on the moon?" etc... *spoilers end*) the show becomes a lot more harder to understand.

If you want to watch something that's simple and and quite easy to understand than Pale Cocoon is probably NOT the best anime for you. However if you like the idea of a challange, go for it --- I mean the anime did win an award for Best Screen Play at one point, why wouldn't you give it a chance?
