  • I have an obsession and I may need help that I don't want.
Madoka Magica is a cutesy story gone horribly wrong horribly fast, which was their intent, to mislead. It's just the right amount of cryptic, the story is fantastic, characters all unique and neat, draws from mythology which I adore, and is more than incredibly dark. The attention to detail is immensely high, the scenery is gorgeous, and you really got to be smart and pay attention to fully ...

A Modern Classic -- Must Watch
I have a personal affinity for "short and sweet" series -- accomplishing such a dynamic, gripping, and fully resolved story while including characters that reach the audience and still managing to keep things easy to follow in such a short amount of time is not an easy thing to do. PMMM was able to do these things expertly in just 12 episodes, and with an impressively complex storyline, no less. ...

  • Puella Magi Madoka★Magica: An Anime with Cute Characters and Dark Themes
When I stumbled into the world of Madoka★Magica, I already had a sense that the anime was not what it seemed to be, as many of the original viewers had found out by the third episode. Being the curious person that I am, I decided to check this anime out, since the magical girl genre is my favorite. Low and behold, I was not wrong.

Madoka★Magica has very harrowing themes and dark stories behind ...

  • My new favorite anime!
Madoka Magica is perhaps the most beautiful anime I've seen to date. Although I'm sure I'm not saying anything that hasn't already been said, it is a beautiful postmodern deconstruction of the magical girl genre, with the moral that the world is a very tough, unforgiving place, but that doesn't mean you can't be happy. Truly a work of art.

  • An amazing subversion of an old formula
I have to admit that I had my doubts when the recommendations for this one started rolling in. I was still fairly fresh to anime and the surface of Madoka Magica really makes it look like your cookie-cutter magical girl series.

    Haha. Nope.

A brilliant delivery of one of the most amazing subversions of the trope. Don't even want to spoil things much further. It's a powerfully disturbing, ...

  • The Iconic Madoka Magica
At first glance this series may seem like just another magical girl show that tries to copy the success of earlier shows like the iconic Sailor Moon or Card Captor Sakura, but Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a magical girl series in a class all its own. It starts out just like any other magical girl anime. Our young heroine, in this case a girl named Madoka Kaname, has a prophetic dream and is ...

Worth You Time, Though Very Much Overrated
Madoka Magica has sublime technical aspects. The animation is among the best in the medium, the soundtrack is ambient, and the sense of aesthetic is very well thought out. I got a lot of enjoyment out of this series and it's conclusion film, Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion. It's also directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, and anyone familiar with his other work ( Sayonara Zetsubo ...

  • Not what you expect - Twist on magical girl genre
When I first stumbled across this anime, I thought oh a magical girl anime. Not for me. Gave it an episode and dropped it. After hearing critical reviews I decided I would grind through and see what the fuss is about. Get to Episode 3 and oh man, regret not watching this earlier. Personally, I don't like the art style of the anime but the creativity in the fight scenes, the great sound track and ...

  • The war of hope vs. despair -- magical girls style!!
    Minor spoilers ahead.
The dark themes of this anime are beautifully portrayed behind pretty colors and captivating music, fooling the viewer, as you probably know, until that fateful third episode. Despite being such a short show, Madoka will surely stick with you throughout your anime experience, as it did with me.

Even the opening song was beautiful enough to make me want ...
