  • Unexpectedly different
A friend recommended this to me and described it as "like Sailor Moon, but with lesbians" so I took a shot with it. I typically don't like a lot of Shojo because I find a lot of animes in that genre to have very predictable storylines that while nice, are boring to me. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Madoka Magica. The animation is amazing, the storyline was unexpected, and the character ...

  • Surprisingly dark while exploring very deep themes.
Don't let the cover art and opening fool you; this is a dark anime with some very deep and very intriguing themes - including the cost of miracles, and what it means to be human. The first couple of episodes are in line with the cutesy magical girl theme. As the episodes progress, the show slowly peels away at its layers, revealing the true nature of what's at stake.

    Highly recommend it, a ...

  • A beautifully written anime.
Initially I was put off by a few elements Madoka Magica intoduced, but after 2-3 episodes the plot picks up. From that point on the writing is basically flawless; great character development, well utilized and timely plot devices, and everything you expect of a good fantasy series. This anime is an amazing experience even if you aren't familiar with the magical girl genre. Even within its genre, ...

  • I have an obsession and I may need help that I don't want.
Madoka Magica is a cutesy story gone horribly wrong horribly fast, which was their intent, to mislead. It's just the right amount of cryptic, the story is fantastic, characters all unique and neat, draws from mythology which I adore, and is more than incredibly dark. The attention to detail is immensely high, the scenery is gorgeous, and you really got to be smart and pay attention to fully ...

A Modern Classic -- Must Watch
I have a personal affinity for "short and sweet" series -- accomplishing such a dynamic, gripping, and fully resolved story while including characters that reach the audience and still managing to keep things easy to follow in such a short amount of time is not an easy thing to do. PMMM was able to do these things expertly in just 12 episodes, and with an impressively complex storyline, no less. ...

  • Puella Magi Madoka★Magica: An Anime with Cute Characters and Dark Themes
When I stumbled into the world of Madoka★Magica, I already had a sense that the anime was not what it seemed to be, as many of the original viewers had found out by the third episode. Being the curious person that I am, I decided to check this anime out, since the magical girl genre is my favorite. Low and behold, I was not wrong.

Madoka★Magica has very harrowing themes and dark stories behind ...

  • My new favorite anime!
Madoka Magica is perhaps the most beautiful anime I've seen to date. Although I'm sure I'm not saying anything that hasn't already been said, it is a beautiful postmodern deconstruction of the magical girl genre, with the moral that the world is a very tough, unforgiving place, but that doesn't mean you can't be happy. Truly a work of art.

  • An amazing subversion of an old formula
I have to admit that I had my doubts when the recommendations for this one started rolling in. I was still fairly fresh to anime and the surface of Madoka Magica really makes it look like your cookie-cutter magical girl series.

    Haha. Nope.

A brilliant delivery of one of the most amazing subversions of the trope. Don't even want to spoil things much further. It's a powerfully disturbing, ...

  • The Iconic Madoka Magica
At first glance this series may seem like just another magical girl show that tries to copy the success of earlier shows like the iconic Sailor Moon or Card Captor Sakura, but Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a magical girl series in a class all its own. It starts out just like any other magical girl anime. Our young heroine, in this case a girl named Madoka Kaname, has a prophetic dream and is ...
