The art and animation was fantastic all the way through of course. I really liked all character (art) designs. Amu, Rima, Utau etc. all look fantastic, as well as the guys like ikuto, tadase, and so forth. The detailed drawing really does stand out from the rest of the other 'childrens anime' and perhaps that is why this anime can be favored by people of any age. In terms of art/animation, I would give it 5/5 exactly the time of drawings I like, and I'm sure that you would love it too. So no problems there.
Now the story line... OK basically, the story revolves around hinamori amu, the main protagonist of the anime. Every kid has an egg in their heart... An egg that contains their dream, their 'want to be selves'. Amu and the other members of the 'guardian' at school each posses at least one of these eggs that have hatched, born from a strong feeling that they want to be someone else, differing from their outer appearances. Then antagonists finally appear. They extract these eggs from weakened hearts in search of a legendary egg known as 'embryo' that grants any wish. The extractions cause the egg to become dark, and filled with hopelessness in which Amu, with her special power, purifies it into the normal egg that re-enters the owners heart. So that's a simple synopsis of the story. The first season went well like that, but problems started arising (in my opinion) in the second season, and eventually just.. crashed in the third. That is what I mean by 'goes up ... goes down'. Let me warn you that there is an incredible amount of filler episodes throughout this show. In fact, the third season is pretty much all fillers. Due to these fillers, even during a serious period in the plot, the atmosphere abruptly changes from carefree->serious->carefree... Something that could very well annoy the viewers. Fillers are deadly and is a real test of your patience. If you aren't very confident in your patience, like me, you will have a hard time watching from season 2 and 3. Also regarding the story, I would have preferred it if there had been more drama in this anime... rather than repetitive, shallow events. But then again, it IS a children's show so.. I musn't complain too much. But I wonder... how many people reading this can be actually categorized as a 'child' ?
Music was okay i guess but... who actually listens to the OP and ED? most of us just skip the first 1 minute 30 seconds do we not? oh well 4/5!
characters....Hinamori Amu was a great character. Perfect protagonist. I liked her optimism, her kindness, everything pretty much. One thing that bothered me was her indecisiveness regarding Ikuto and Tadase. Actually that's not quite right... If the anime ended without her choosing anyone, that would have been better. But instead, the ending made it seem like a couple had formed, but amu still couldn't decide... a rather ambiguous and unclear... UNSETTLING ending I would say. Tadase looked too much like a girl, acted too much like a girl, and even when he was suppose to look manly... to me he wasn't anything close to being manly at all. Thats all, I don't know about others, I didn't particularly like this guy's personality. Its too 'normal'. Ikuto on the other hand was so much of a better character. His way of showing love is unique and stands out in comparison to Tadase's. As for other characters like Nadeshiko, I would have preferred her as a her the whole way through... Other characters .. I don't really have much to say. Ikuto + amu ... character designs make up 5/5 but I think Tadase, the next main protagonist after amu brings it down to 4/5.
So yeah... that review was just my opinion after watching the show. To be honest, MANGA IS BETTER GUYS
