Squid Girl

Squid Girl is for those that enjoy episodic slice of life style anime with a dash of light hearted comedy topped at times with bizzare moments. The animation quality is pretty good for it being released once a week and the show surprises you once in a while with neat animated battle sequences or smooth tentacle action (not hentai, really - stop looking at me like that). The art style is frankly quite generic but the characters are loveable and all pretty unique from each other. New characters are introduced at a pretty good pace and the comedy revolves around Ika chan adjusting to life on land and her unique squid abilities. It's definitely something you can watch casually, like a sit-com.

The phrase "a fish out of water" is typically used to describe a story where the character is put in a situation for which they are utterly unsuitable. Squid Girl is the the closest thing to an actual fish out of water story that I have ever seen! Although of course squids are not fish but cephalopods but that's a minor detail.

Squid Girl came to the surface to punish humanity for polluting the ocean. However, shortly after coming to the surface, she is informed of the magnitude of her task by the owners of "Lemon", a seaside restaurant, whom she had marked as her first victims. As she tries to get the humans to take her seriously, she ends up working as a waitress and gets more or less adopted by the siblings who run the "Lemon".

Squid Girl does make one serious attempt to be all psycho with the siblings, wrapping-up two of them in her surprisingly powerful tentacles, ready to claim them as her first victims in her squid-vasion quest. However, she is quickly subdued by the eldest of the three siblings, who ends up making Squid Girl make amends by committing minor "squid abuse" by getting Squid Girl to spew out her ink repeatedly for the restaurants new squid-ink pasta!

That is not to say that the siblings don't care for Squid Girl. They go out of their way to humour her, throwing her a party and generally helping her adjust to life on the surface. Not that they are above teasing her about getting too used to life on the surface, to the point that Squid Girl thinks she is able to drown. Come to think of it... can Squids drown? I know sharks can drown if they stop swimming but I don't think I have ever heard the phenomenon of squids drowning... hmm....

A right, the review. One Squid Girl episode consists of three short stories that are roughly 7 minutes long. This is a good length and keeps the gags fresh. After watching two episodes, six short stories, I do not think that there is going to be any overarching story or any sort of story arc at all. The squid-vasion is just an excuse to get Squid Girl to shore to set-up the squid out of water premise from which the series draws its gags. Squid Girl is something you watch to get a few laughs, to have your day brightened and that's that. Sure there is the underlying message that we should look after the sea but it is not heavy handed. It is just there, in the background, simmering just beneath the surface (does that qualify as a pun...) and it is an important lesson to remember. I mean, if Squid Girl makes you put that candy wrapper in your pocket or hold on to that bottle until you can dispose of your rubbish properly the next time you are at the beach, I am sure she'll be very squidly happy! In the meantime, enjoy Squid Girl in all her squidly glory.

The animation is really cute and well done, very clean and crisp. The colors are bright giving it a child’s feel with the playful way they did it. The water design is rather believable, and the background textures are well created. The voices are cute in both English and Japanese, including all the little ‘squidness’ language she says. She’s really cute and her voice not really that annoying. The music is rather good when I heard it, though there are times when it was way to quiet.

What can I say about Squid Girl? It's premise is completely weird, humanoid squid wants to take over mankind, by invading a beach restaurant. And you know what, it works. Well. Squid Girl is one of those shows that, if you are in a foul mood, will lift your spirits after watching it. The comedy is great, while not all jokes work (their is a cultural difference afterall) most of the them are great, I can't tell you how many times my ribs started to hurt or I felt dizzy from laughing too much. Oh wait, I can, it's about 24 times, the same number of episodes there are. Coincidence? The characters are excellent, there's such a wide selection it will be impossible to find someone you don't like. Speaking of characters, let's talk about the main one, Squid Girl. Squid Girl is one of those few anime characters that if you only saw their silhouette, you would instantly recognize them. But she's not just about her character design, she was a bunch of little quirks that make her character so great, and her chemistry with the side characters is fantastic, their interactions will leave you ROFLMAO (or however you type it). The stories are a perfect size, the problem with a lot of comedy anime is that they spend an entire 20 mintues on a single joke (To-Love-Ru comes to mind) but with Squid Girl, you get three stories in one episode (just like in classic cartoons of yesteryear, and by yesteryear I mean when Dexter's Lab and Johnny Bravo were still around). If you are looking for an enjoyable half hour (or a dozen hours) then check it out. I dare you to keep a staright face.

STORYLINE: The storyline is about a squid who comes up from the sea and wants the humans to stop their polution of the oceans. She discovers that the humans aren't as bad as they seem, but also but alien and very unsquid like. She is always doing something weird and getting into something. She is funny and make you want tokeep watching. The anime Squid Girl is perfect to get away from all the regular anime plot lines. It fun and light hearted and a great watch to cheer you up in down times. It is a good watch and very enjoyable.

OVERALL: This anime has a storyline but it more of a light one. It all fun no real action. It is something that you can watch any episode
and know what is going on. It is made to make you laugh and think about pollution and pass time with.
