Earlier this year I had the pleasure of watching something that proved to be a unique treasure. No, it's not a new watch or hat that can do just about anything. A new hat yes, but not the squid hat that I had made out of paper after watching the video. It's the squidtastic invader Squid Girl. I didn't really know what to expect when I clicked watch. So I naturally let the invasion begin and I am surely glad that I let it (alright, it took over rather easily).
Soft edges and quite a bit of blue. Squid Girl's animation was clean, simplistic in some points, and brings forth many faces I've seen throughout anime. It's not bad per se, especially with the way this series played out. It works out rather well. What kept me going through each episode was Squid Girl and the interactions that surrounds the Lemon beach house. On that note, a good deal of the series sets itself in and focuses around the beach and the Aizawa house. Knowing this, the few times it panned away from those locations was definitely a treat.
As I watched each episode, I kept being amazed at the group dynamic. Every group plays off each other so well. The way everyone was introduced was much like a torrent and my favorite introduction for this series so far has been Chizuru. As the characters are what I believe to be the main focus of this show rather than them going through a plot, I'd leave things at that and just give this advice for this series, let the invasion begin and it's hard to not laugh at the naiveté that Squid Girl shows so well. It's a joy to watch and the rest of season two can't come any faster.
While season two is largely the same type of hijinks as seen in the first season. It doesn't lose much of it's ability to entertain. Quite possibly my only gripes about the second season are ironically near the beginning and the ending. Early on, I felt that they relied too much on flashback of the first season, I didn't quite feel that these were natural points to insert a flashback so it had that feeling of awkwardness. As for the ending, I'll just say that it makes me wish there was a bit more, the ending sequence made me wish to watch all of what was happening. The last thing I hope for is a future third season but I do wonder if it has enough energy without feeling too stale. This was a highly entertaining series that I'd be glad to rewatch again.
