The World God Only Knows centres around 'the God of Conquest' Keima Katsuragi, a gaming nerd who plays nothing but dating sims. He says he is only interested in 2D girls that appear in these games. Then he gets an e-mail telling him that there is a girl to conquer. Thinking it's a challenge, he accepts, and gets himself into a deal with the devil. This sends a girl named Elsie (who has a name so long I cannot be bothered to write) and they both have to hunt down loose souls. To defeat them, he has to take the place of the loose souls in the persons heart.
This is a good concept in theory. And sometimes it works brilliantly. Especially in what I concider to be the peak of the series, the Kanon arc. In this, he has to capture the heart of Kanon Nakagawa, an idol who is afraid of not getting noticed. It's more interesting than the others, it has a few good laughs and the music here is reall good. Here, there are a fair few tracks that could easily count as half decent J-Pop, and never feels rushed.
In fact, the music seems to be the series strong point. The opening theme is a good mix in styles that, while you won't be singing it out loud, is still fairly memorable. The end theme is good aswell. Meanwhile, the tracks that background the show are hit and miss. Some seem to be out of place, while others, like a few in the Shiomiya Shiori story, fit perfectly.
There's not much to say about the animation, which is pretty much the usual that you'd expect.
The character's seem to be cliched at times, but it feels intentional, and works for the show. Not much more to say.
Overall, it's an enjoyable anime to watch, but there are better shows to watch.
EDIT: So far, the second season has been much better than the first.
The original series was interesting but the characters the Katsuragi had to 'conquer' felt cliched, removing some gloss from an overall good, well-animated show. This season changes that.
So far, they have seemingly stepped away from using cliched characters for the conquests, although the first conquest with Kusunoki felt like it fell in the trap a bit. Although after that it improved, introducing Haqua, the district chief as they helped capture a large soul, which was better as they didn't use the same 'girl has loose soul, Katsuragi falls in love with said girl, loose soul leaves, everyones happy' routine that every other one has.
They even decided to do a conquest on one of the main characters, Chihiro, which is so far the best of the three arcs this season. I thought it was interesting how, instead of him falling in love again, he tried to help her fall in love with someone else to trigger the same thing, but having her fall in love with him instead over time.
Overall, a much improved second season, and one that makes this one of the better shows of the current season.
