People have sympathetic reactions to machines already. I know other people who cajole, threaten and beg their cars to work. Thanking a machine doesn't make logical sense, but it's not really too abnormal.

One thing I don't get is why he reacts as if he's outraged. It can be a shock, but rather than be fascinated, he seems only revolted at first. I would be greatly in awe and curious and not stop short of a convo with my droid.
