Chihayafuru is well made, heart-warming and a total breath of fresh air.
I would not say I'm a fan of Anime in general, I've only ever seen 3 complete series and I'm very selective about art style. I'm definately more into the Josei stuff, but even within this genre I find many animes to be over the top and their characters either cliche or just hard to take seriously as human beings. This anime was a total breath of fresh air. It is not only beautiful, but the ...

This anime compelled me to memorise Waka
I think the mark of a good anime is one that is not only enjoyable, but compels you to improve yourself as a person. Rarely does a sports anime move me to actually want to participate in the sport, but there you go. Chihayafuru did the impossible and made me buy books on the 小倉百人一首, besides a spanking new box of karuta cards and CDs. Sure, I may not have anyone to play the game with, but I can now ...

What does this anime not have??!!
From animation, storyline, MCs, side characters to thrilling scenes Chihayafuru has it all!! Can't wait to see if Arata reaches his dream, if anyone can ever beat Shinobu-chan and if there's any luck for taichi with his romance and karuta!!! Great anime would definitely recommend.

Beautiful direction for an underrated sport
Chihayafuru is one of those amazingly directed animes that don't get the attention they deserve. The beautiful art style alone would have been enough to sell me on this anime, but it's how everything fits perfectly to create a story about overcoming hardships and dealing with the frustration of not achieving your goals!

Every scene where characters reflect upon themselves and their objectives ...

It shouldn't work. But it does.
In so many ways this really shouldn't work, but it really does.

I think it's power is twofold. It's in the characters and in the tension created in the writing of the game scenes.

I study old Japan, and I've had to study Japanese waka poetry. I really hated working with them, and this anime hasn't changed my mind - I still think they're unnecessarily difficult to pull meaning from and ...

One worth watching till the very end!
I really enjoyed Chihayafuru, It wasn't just an anime where the main character was a girl and everything was flowery and girly and all thing wonderful - it was exactly the opposite! This anime is all about Chihaya, a young girl who has decided to learn how to play a game called Karuta, a competitive game where you have to finish the poem that is being spoken using the cards that you are given. ...

  • This anime is perfect.
As an avid anime watcher - I've seen a great deal of different anime of different genres. Generally, after a while it can get quite tiresome binging lots of episodes/series in a row especially from the same genre. However I didn't get this with Chihayafuru. After having watched all 3 seasons a while ago and then re-watched them, I still think it's my favourite anime. The animation is done ...

    Very fun and educational.
I liked this very much it was epic. The Subtitle team also worked very hard on this.
I think people will enjoy it more if they can read and understand Japanese and if not they can use the Pause button :)

I base all my reviews mainly on the Anime I don't look at the Manga or any light-novels.

I did not like that Chihaya played from a very young age and yet she was still finding weaknesses in ...
